This isn't really written by Lee...Suzan hacked in and is adding an article. On the way to Kapadokya, we stopped to see (and walk on) the salt lake. It is the second largest lake in Turkey, but the exciting part was that the salt is so thick that we could walk on the lake. Now we can all say that we've walked on water and we're telling the truth!! It was almost like we were walking on sand, but under the dusty stuff (salt) was really a lake. we could make holes in the salt and see the water less than an inch below and we didn't fall into the water when we made the holes. I would think it should work like ice and that we should fall in if we made holes in it, but the salt was still strong even with holes in it. |

Home again! The flights home were pretty uneventful...we managed to get home with all of our luggage, no missed flights, we made it through customs ok, and none of our breakables packed in our luggage ended up broken even though we watched 2 of our bags fall from the airplane to the ground missing the conveyor belt completely. Not too bad.
Keep an eye on the blog over the next week or so. I will have some updates, at least 1 more photo gallery, AND as an added bonus, some video of Erdodu's driving in Ankara. |

Photos from the Blue Mosque. It is very impressive...it is undoubtedly the larges open room I've ever seen. The pillars supporting it are enourmous (take a look at the picture of Suzan and Alex standing in front of one of the 4). |

The Aya Sophia (Hagia Sophia) was originally a church built in 342 AD, but when the muslims took over Istanbul, they converted it to a mosque. The plastered over and repainted all of the original mosaics, BUT, before they did, they documented all of them. They are now in the process of restoring the mosacs to their original condition. |

Topkapa Saray, the Sultan's Palace. Built on the hill overlooking the Bosphorous--what a gorgeous view. Unfortunately, cameras were not allowed in many of the exhibits, but the exterior is beautiful! |

Büyükada, the Big Island off of Istanbul. We took a 2 hour ferry ride to the island. They don't allow cars on the island, so we had to get to Nur and Sami's house by a horse drawn carriage. Their house is beautiful, and has an awesome view of the Sea of Marmara. We went to their beach club to swim. The water was beautiful, warm, and clear! Their house and the sea were some of our favorite places and we were happy to get away from the exhaust smells of Istanbul. The only downside was that an island full of horse-drawn carriages has its own special form of exhaust! |
