Photos from the Blue Mosque. It is very impressive...it is undoubtedly the larges open room I've ever seen. The pillars supporting it are enourmous (take a look at the picture of Suzan and Alex standing in front of one of the 4). |

The Aya Sophia (Hagia Sophia) was originally a church built in 342 AD, but when the muslims took over Istanbul, they converted it to a mosque. The plastered over and repainted all of the original mosaics, BUT, before they did, they documented all of them. They are now in the process of restoring the mosacs to their original condition. |

Topkapa Saray, the Sultan's Palace. Built on the hill overlooking the Bosphorous--what a gorgeous view. Unfortunately, cameras were not allowed in many of the exhibits, but the exterior is beautiful! |

Büyükada, the Big Island off of Istanbul. We took a 2 hour ferry ride to the island. They don't allow cars on the island, so we had to get to Nur and Sami's house by a horse drawn carriage. Their house is beautiful, and has an awesome view of the Sea of Marmara. We went to their beach club to swim. The water was beautiful, warm, and clear! Their house and the sea were some of our favorite places and we were happy to get away from the exhaust smells of Istanbul. The only downside was that an island full of horse-drawn carriages has its own special form of exhaust! |

Another kidnapping!!! And this one we paid for!
We paid 20 (about ytl 35) for a tour of Side (rhymes with bidet), Kursunlu Selale (a waterfall) and Aspendos. All we were really interested in was Aspendos, but the guide spoke English, the bus was air conditioned, it included all admissions and lunch...so we booked the tour. |

More photos from Kapadokya. Many people still live in caves and underground structures. The Pottery factory has been there for over 200 years. It is family run and owned. They paint many designs, both their own and historical designs. Because they are underground, they have natural air conditioning. |

Kapadokya - Goeme. Kapadokya at Goeme.
The caves were dug into the tuff (volcanic deposits) in the 3rd century. It was variously inhabited by monks and religious orders through the early 20th century. |
