On Tuesday, July 10, three American tourists were kidnapped on the green between the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. The three tourists were minding their own business, when they were approached by a man who spoke very good English and gave them tips on visiting both the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. He continued on that the Kilim museum was closed on Tuesdays, but that his family's museum was open and asked if they would like to see it. It was right around the corner
The tourists were seen leaving the green with this gentlemen to walk (in a very populated area) around the corner to this "museum" which was disguised as a Carpet Shop. Since the carpet shop had several other customers and looked reputable (not a run down dump as some were), they went inside where they were offered tea, coffee, and apple tea while they were given a new carpet sales pitch. After being shown several "flying" carpets, and assuring the salesman that they would not be purchasing a ytl 7000 carpet or even a ytl 2300 carpet (that was beautiful), the carpet salesman offered them his card with the hope that is 10 years they would return to purchase a "flying" carpet at that time, even though it would cost significantly more. More significantly, two days later, the tourists ran into "Mike" from California in Istanbul. As they were relating their story of their recent abduction, he told them of a similar experience which included a Turkish Bath, dinner, drinks, etc. which ended in the purchase of a carpet! |
